How many calories are there in Berocca?

Berocca contains negligible calories:

  • Berocca effervescent tablets each contain only 6–8 kcal – depending on the flavour
  • Berocca film-coated tablets each contain less than 1 kcal
  • Berocca Boost effervescent tablets each contain 8 kcal; a sachet of Berocca Boost powder contains 3 kcal
Are Berocca film-coated tablets any different to the effervescent tablets?

Both Berocca effervescent tablets and film-coated tablets contain all 8 B vitamins. Including vitamin B1 to help release energy and B5 to support mental performance.

Berocca film-coated tablets are swallowed with a glass of water.

Berocca effervescent tablets are dissolved in water to be enjoyed as a drink.

The film-coated tablets contain lactose in the coating, which should be noted by people with a vegan diet and a lactose/milk intolerance.

There are slightly different levels of vitamins and minerals in the film-coated tablets and the effervescent tablets, and between Berocca and Berocca Boost; please see below for more detail:

What does NRV mean?

NRV stands for Nutrient Reference Value. This is the daily amount of a vitamin or mineral that the average person should aim to include in their diet.

The % NRV in a food supplement label tells you how much of the recommend allowance for a vitamin or mineral allowance you get from each dose of the supplement.

It is a straight replacement for RDA (Recommended Daily Amount).

Should I be concerned that Berocca contains levels of vitamins above the NRV?

There is no need for concern: the vitamins in Berocca are at levels above the NRV (Nutrient Reference Values), but they are all below the Upper Safe Levels which were established in 2003 by an expert group who examined information available for dietary vitamins and minerals

The NRV of vitamins is an EU-recommended amount to ensure people are not lacking important nutrition. Some supplements contain levels of vitamins and minerals above the NRV where this nutrient intake is considered safe.

The B vitamins and vitamin C in Berocca are water-soluble vitamins. This is important for two reasons:

  • You need them in your diet every day because many are not stored in the body for any length of time
  • Any B vitamins or vitamin C provided by your diet and Berocca that exceed your body’s needs are passed out of your system in the urine
My Berocca Orange Effervescent tablet has no paper foil in the tube?

The foil paper you may have seen previously, has been phased out of the packaging of Berocca Orange Effervescent Tablet.

Can I take more than one tablet a day?

The recommended daily intake is one tablet per day, and Berocca is suitable and suggested for daily use.

How do you take Berocca?

Berocca and Berocca Boost effervescent tablets: add 1 tablet to a glass or bottle of water and let it to dissolve to make a great tasting and refreshing drink.

Berocca film-coated tablets: take 1 easy-to-swallow tablet with a glass of water.

Berocca Boost Fast Melts and Berocca Fizzy Melts: pour the sachet content directly onto your tongue.

Are there any safety issues associated with taking Berocca?

We are not aware of any safety issues specific to any of the Berocca formulations. The suggested daily intake for Berocca products is one tablet or sachet per day and it is recommended not to exceed this.

Berocca Effervescent and Film Coated Tablets are not suitable for people with kidney problems.

Berocca Boost should not be taken in combination with ephedrine or other stimulants.

None of the Berocca products are suitable to those who are pregnant, breast-feeding or children under the age of 18 years old.

Why does Berocca make my urine change colour?

Berocca products contain vitamin B2 (riboflavin). Like all B vitamins, B2 is water-soluble so your body takes what it needs and discards the rest. The presence of vitamin B2 in your urine can result in a more intense colour.

This is harmless and not a cause for any concern.

Can I use Berocca during pregnancy/whilst breastfeeding?
Berocca is not recommended for pregnant and breastfeeding women. This is due to the complex nutritional needs of pregnant and breastfeeding women and Berocca has not been specifically formulated for use as a pre/post-natal supplement. We recommend that you talk to your GP, midwife or pharmacist about food supplements.
Is Berocca suitable for children?

Berocca and Berocca Boost are suitable for adults (aged 18 years and over). For children there are special food supplements which provide a balanced formulation of the vitamins and minerals a young child needs for healthy growth and development.

Aspartame has been assessed as being safe as an ingredient in foods and food supplements by both the UK Government Food Standard Agency (FSA) and EFSA. The safety of aspartame was re-reviewed by EFSA in December 2013 and it was concluded that aspartame and its breakdown products are safe for the general population (including infants, children and pregnant women).

Does Berocca contain salt?

Berocca does not contribute to significantly increased sodium intake levels when used according to on pack instructions. Berocca recommends taking only one a day.

The sodium in the effervescent tablets comes mainly in the form of sodium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate which are used to create the well-known “Berocca fizz”. These ingredients are used in almost all effervescent tablets. Sodium bicarbonate is also commonly used as a raising ingredient in baking and is also known as “baking soda” or “bread soda”.

Salt is classified as sodium chloride. Berocca effervescent tablets each contain 273–287 mg of sodium. This is equivalent to around 0.7g (682.5-717.5 mg) of salt.

For those who are looking to reduce their sodium intake further, Berocca is also available in non-effervescent formats.

  • Berocca Fizzy Melts contain 30mg (0.03g) sodium per tablet
  • Berocca Boost Fast Melt Powders contain 11mg (0.01g) per sachet
  • Berocca Film Coated tablets are classed as “low in sodium” and contain less than 2 mg (0.002 g) of salt per tablet.

The recommended intake of salt per day for an adult is 6g (6000mg). 75% of the salt that we eat comes from everyday processed foods, such as bread, breakfast cereal and ready meals.
